Lion Dance :
A Cultural Symbol Across East Asia
The Lion Dance is a traditional performing art found across many parts of Asia, including Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam. Influenced by local cultures, the lion’s appearance varies significantly, forming two main schools:
⦁ Northern Lion: Prevalent north of the Yangtze River, featuring a realistic appearance. Dancers in traditional costumes lead the lion, which is often accompanied by colourful ribbons and embroidered balls, performing agile and vigorous movements.
⦁ Southern Lion: Represented by Guangdong and Hong Kong, also known as the “Awakening Lion” (Cantonese: Sing Si). It emphasizes a powerful demeanour and auspicious symbolism, integrating elements of martial arts, dance, and drama.
Lion Dance culture is deeply rooted in Hong Kong, having been established in local communities since the early 20th century. It frequently appears at festivals, religious ceremonies, weddings, celebrations, consecration rituals, official events, and even funerals. It serves not only as an auspicious symbol but also carries social functions like warding off evil spirits, bringing in good fortune, and strengthening community bonds. The Lion Dance is more than a performance art; it is a living tradition embodying Hong Kong’s folk beliefs and collective memory.
Sing Si Craftsmanship: The Four Core Steps of an ICH Artisan
Traditional Sing Si head making involves four core processes—“Bind, Paper, Paint, Adorn”:
⦁ Bind (扎): Creating the structural framework using bamboo strips or rattan.
⦁ Paper (撲): Applying layers of paper or muslin over the frame to strengthen and shape it.
⦁ Paint (寫): Painting intricate patterns (e.g., cloud motifs, flame patterns) using vibrant colours, imbuing the lion with symbolic meaning.
⦁ Adorn (裝): Adding final details like mirrors, pompoms, and mane fibres to bring the lion’s character to life.
