Traditional Fa Pai:
A Microcosm of Hong Kong’s Century-Old Culture
Traditional Hong Kong-style Fa Pai (Flower plaque) originated in the 1920s, with a history spanning over a hundred years. Their origins are debated: some suggest they are an extension of Chinese architectural pailou (decorative arches), while others believe they stem from folk imitations of imperial auspicious decorations. As a unique cultural symbol of Hong Kong, Fa Pai carries social memories from the last century to the present, integrating cultural significance, aesthetic value, and historical and social contexts. However, past craftsmen often focused solely on the skill itself, with limited systematic documentation and transmission, leaving this tradition at risk of fading. How to revitalize and sustain Fa Pai culture is an urgent contemporary challenge.

.Miniature Fa Pai .
An Innovative Transformation of Tradition
Currently, public awareness of Hong Kong-style Fa Pai is low, and the traditional crafting process is complex (taking at least half a month), leading this craft to be gradually forgotten. Addressing this, guided by the core philosophy that “Conservation = Preservation + Education”, we have designed the “Miniature Fa Pai Workshop”.
